Steve M McCauley
Spiral and circular shapes have long been used to represent the cycle of death and rebirth, as well as the perfection of the universe. The mandala, a geometric (usually circular) design symbolic of the universe, is traditionally used in Hinduism and Buddhism as an aid to meditation, as well as a symbol of protection and healing. My pieces combine the meditative aspect of mandalas with the spiral shape often seen in nature.

While embroidering the shapes and patterns in my pieces, I often become consumed in the work, the repetitive task of stitching encouraging a trancelike state. The work becomes a tangible representation of my meditation. The spiral patterns found in each piece are reminiscent of the natural world, reminding the viewer of the whorl of a seashell, the double helix of strands of DNA, or the concentric circles of a pebble dropped in a puddle.

Looking closely, one can see the weave of the fabrics in each piece. The choice of materials lets the viewer relate to the work in a way one cannot relate to a painting; everyday we are covered by the clothing we wear, the sheets on our beds – fabrics are a part of everyday life. But creating art transcends daily life, bringing brilliance out of the mundane and transforming repetition into prayer.
