Linda Garriott

During the last twenty years I’ve been living with paint, clay, and fiber, and it is in fiber where I have settled.

I made my first hand hooked rug in 1986 at the urging of a friend.  The woman who taught me, Hallie Hall, was an icon of traditional, some say primitive, rug hooking.  She presented me with a burlap canvas of a Navajo inspired design because she didn’t think I gave out the strawberry, puppy dog, cow over the moon vibe.

While working on that project, I began thinking of ways to express my own ideas in this particular medium.  My next rug project was my first original design, and I also experimented with custom dyeing techniques.  In this work, and others that followed I explored symmetry and straight lines, and I have always enjoyed playing with color.

A few years ago I began exploring asymmetry and curvilinear lines, and I haven’t looked back.   My challenge when approaching a design is to create geometric harmony while maintaining an asymmetrical and curvilinear perspective.

Rugs are such a fabulous medium for art.  Not only are they beautiful, they are also functional.

Designing rugs is my passion because they are beautiful and functional.  We sit on them, play on them, cats and dogs sleep on them, and children learn to walk on them.  They are a foundation for all that happens in homes all over the world.

My designs are distinguished by their lyrical and curvaceous lines.  Color is also an important part of my work.  My designs are eclectic, and they will work in contemporary, transitional, arts & crafts, Asian, and eclectic settings.  In addition to my Signature Collection, I will also custom rugs for your home or office.

My passion for rug design started when I began making hand hooked rugs in 1986, after taking classes from the late Hallie Hall, an icon in traditional American rug hooking.  Hallie very graciously encouraged me to pursue the craft by applying my artistic vision and bold use of color to original work.

I had been thinking about developing my own collection for many years, and a few years ago, the idea took root, and the opportunity became real.  I am very fortunate to work with artisans in India who produce my rugs.  They are all made with luxurious 100% New Zealand worsted wool.  Wool/silk blends are also available.  Rugs are hand tufted or hand knotted.

The Signature Collection includes seven designs; each design is available in five standard sizes, and a palette of fifty colors from which to choose.  Custom sizing and custom color are also available on all Signature Collection rugs.  New designs are being unveiled throughout this year as well.

I am very pleased to sponsor Rugmark; an international nonprofit organization that works with rug producers in India, Pakistan, and Nepal to end illegal child labor in the rug industry.  Rugmark also provides educational programming for children in these areas.

My rugs are in private collections throughout North America; including New York City, Chicago, Boston, and Toronto.  They have also been featured in regional and national media including Boston Home and Garden Magazine, Dwell, and HGTV.
