Paul Sears
Statement
To give the wood a new lease on life is my intention. I begin by
removing mass, but soon encounter resistance to my plan. I struggle
for control, but the material has its own agenda. Eventually, if all
goes well, we arrive at a compromise, and my original idea evolves. As
the wood and I reach this understanding, I discover another path to
a goal which is also changing. As more mass is removed, forms
begin to appear which I could not have discovered on my own—happy
surprises that guide me forward. Then, if all goes well, and
if I follow its lead, the piece finally begins to resemble a living
thing—not fixed, but still becoming... If all goes well.
