Biography

I was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. As a child I have memories of my family vacationing in Yosemite National Park where I was mesmerized by the natural beauty and grandeur. I got my first camera for my birthday at the age of 10. I took my first photo class in High School and fell in love; I knew what I wanted to do. I studied Art and Photography and the University of California at Santa Cruz graduating in 1999. I continued to study with the help of a co-worker and mentor at a local camera store learning more of the technical and commercial side of photography.

While working in the photo retail industry I have seen the progress and paradigm shift from film and darkroom to digital capture, manipulation, and printing. I shoot and print digitally but prefer to leave image manipulation to a minimum of what I could do in a traditional wet darkroom.

I have displayed my work in solo and group exhibitions on the East and West Coast. I have been inspired by the work of Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Galen Rowell. I have a goal to keep pursuing my passion for photography, nature, and sharing it with more of the world.

Statement

My work varies widely in subject matter and approach.  The core element that I strive for in my work is to convey a feeling, an emotion, a mood, an experience.  I hope the viewer can sense the emotional and spiritual elements of the moment the image is captured.  The moment the feeling, memory, experience is captured.  To share this experience, and moment, with another human being is to make a connection; a connection that binds us as people and a society.

These images of the American West and its wide open spaces, vast emptiness, the barren wastelands, the timelessness, were captured in Spring of 2009.  Through this harsh unforgiving environment there remains a beauty and grandeur and majesty, that touches us deep in our souls.

If you can feel, can sense, even a twinge of that moment, that emotion, that experience…then the connection has been made.
