Statement

I find working in art to be meditative and therapeutic.  My works tend toward round shapes and warmth. I pay much attention to detail and want to explore and discover what it is that makes things appear real. One way that I experiment is when I use only three watercolor pigments – yellow, magenta, and cyan – to create all the colors for a painting. I also experiment with layering watercolors. I am intrigued by the effects of light, shadows, colors, and shapes, especially in nature and the objects around me and in reflective surfaces. Sometimes I am drawn to the shape of a single object standing alone in its environment.

The media I use most often are watercolors, charcoal and pencil, and paper layering. I paint in watercolors for landscapes, buildings, and still life paintings. For people and animal portrayals, I prefer the expressiveness of charcoal. I use paper layering to create topographical maps to scale of local towns. I hand-cut and glue each layer in a time and labor-intensive process. These elevation maps reveal a new perspective of the hills and features of the land we see each day. It becomes a way of containing and learning about the world around us that is normally too large to be seen.

With commissions, I especially enjoy and pay attention to the stories of the people behind the request. I try to feature what it is that they like best.
